August 5th to 9th, 2019 - days 11- Red Trail Campground, Medora, North Dakota

August 5, 2019 - Driving to Theodore Roosevelt National Park - Hail Storm

The weather around us had been brutal according to weather reports. We had been lucky not to run into any bad storms. Little did we know our luck was about to run out. We were about 140 miles from Theodore Roosevelt National Park, traveling on decent road I-94 so should not have been a problem. Unfortunately, about an hour into our travels the skies darkened and the wind began blowing so hard it felt like the MH was going over. Ron was struggling keeping the MH on the road.

Clouds started rolling in. Interesting becase the clouds were black but don't look i in the picture.

It is also hard to tell here but the hail was coming down so hard and so fast it was impossible to see. Ron had  to pull into the breakdown lane. We only hoped that no one would rear- end us. We both kept our seatbelts on just in case. The hail was so loud and the wind blowing so fiercely it even scared Ron an he doesn't scare easily. After about 20 minutes it as over and we had a cracked windshield but we were OK.

About a half-mile down the road there was a truck jack-knifed in the roadway. There was enough room for us to get by. The truck driver was out of the truck and OK so we kept going. Hope to never experience that again.

We arrived at  Red Trail CG around 2:30 pm. By the time we got set up and had lunch it was 3:30.

We drove into town and had a great pizza at a place called  Badlands Pizza.  It was packed with good reason. The pizza was delicious.

After dinner we took a ride into the park t check it out.

We got a small taste of the park ad plan to spend a good part of the day tomorrow exploring.

Back at the CG we took Kasey for a walk and enjoyed the evening. It  stayed light until close to 10  pm. What had really surprised us is the heat and humidity. We thought it would be a lot cooler but 100 degree heat and 68 % humidity was unexpected reality.
